yoga

The simplest and most common translation of the work yoga is ‘union'. In some texts the union that is refers to that of mind and body while in others it is the union of the mind with the self. In a way, yoga may be thought of as the union of all these things, all things which are within us and which are separated, distanced. Yoga is not simply a physical exercise; it is, rather, an intricate and complicated system, the path through which may begin from physical practice. Asanas, as the postures of the popular method of yoga are called, are meant to align the body internally, creating a healthy and solid home for the mind. Paying attention to the body cultivates a quiet focus that gradually aligns the body with the mind. Yogis believe that it is this natural balance of body and mind in which health can manifest itself. An unbalanced body causes physical suffering; an unbalanced mind causes psychological suffering. Although we are usually not aware of it, these two are closely related and inevitably one affects the other. However, if the mind and body are well balanced and healthy, then the person will naturally and effortlessly begin to realize his/her true nature and will live in freedom and happiness.

This concept, of holistic healing, is one which the western world has abandoned for decades. The view of western medicine has evolved into a science of different parts rather than a complete whole. This often leads to long and expensive pharmaceutical therapies which increasingly lead to even more medical visits. However, in recent years there is a slow shift from this fragmented approach to human health, especially with the recognition of the role of psychosomatic symptoms in relation to illness. Although it seems that we are simply going around in circles, the one thing which seems certain is that the mind does indeed affect the body as the body affects the mind. Consequently, in some parts of the world, yoga, as well as other alternative therapies, is often recommended by the physicians themselves.
